Loving the play on words huh? I get blamed much too often for having the pun ridden humor of an 85 year old man.
Flew into Canada the other day to start the 2nd leg of this tour with the Shanes and Beth. This run is looking like its going to be a lot of fun. Playing 10 shows in a row in the Great White Hype that is Canada. Tomorrow we are in Vancouver which is the city I am looking forward to the most. The only other time Ive been in Canada is with Crowder to some conference in Edmonton and already these past 3 days are redeeming my once lackluster outlook on America Junior (canada). Best of all, get to hang out with the Starfield guys for another 3 weeks. These guys are so rad and have such hearts for the Lord. Dave and Gordie are the new drummer and bass player for my side project, Wild Ponies. Clips to come shortly.
Ill probably just post a lot of pictures.
I just finished this book my buddy Jeff gave me "Christ our Mediator" by CJ mahoney. Great book about Christ and the cross, and how we constantly need to cling to it.
Im currently reading AW Tozer's book "The Pursuit of God". Man, too much to blog about in that one. Reality, believe it. More to come on that once Im finished.
Mind you, these are probably the first two books of the religious/spiritual vein Ive ever read. It has me reading the Bible a lot more, something I think we could all stand more of.
"The world is perishing for lack of the knowledge of God and the church is famishing for want of His presence. The instant cure of most of our religious ills would be to enter the Presence in spiritual experience, to become suddenly aware that we are in God and that God is in us. This would burn away the impurities from our lives..." - Tozer

Time Off

Been bad at updating, no more excuses. It was definitely a busy weekend, but I feel like I caught up with a lot of friends and became better friends with some once considered acquaintances. I am in the Phoenix airport right now waiting for a delayed flight to show up. These last couple days were great. I spent Wednesday through Friday recording at a studio in the desert outside of Tuscon, Az. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R_bPOj2tbXI/AAAAAAAAADE/O5faPLkW3os/s320/IMG_0159.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185559870013533554" />
The weather was great and the producer, Tom, had an incredible house with a sweet view of the mountains and Arizona sky.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R_bQCT2tbYI/AAAAAAAAADM/kJAuFRSoM1o/s320/IMG_0160.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185560759071763842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R_bQCj2tbZI/AAAAAAAAADU/IIei-4B1s3I/s320/IMG_0165.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185560763366731154" />
Tom was a new producer for me to work with and I couldn't have left more pleased at how easy he was to work with. We tracked on this singer songwriter's record for a couple days, then recorded some of Tom's original stuff. It was a blast.
Im on my way home to Dallas for 24 hours, then back to Houston to play again. After that I have a couple weeks off before I go to Canada for about 3 weeks.
This just in, standing right in front of me in the airport in full "coach shorts" regalia.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R_bSGz2tbaI/AAAAAAAAADc/uJ22j-O_NQE/s320/IMG_0182.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185563035404430754" />
Reversed thinking. Speaking of blasts, my pedalboard had one too at the end of Shine Your Light. Awkward. So good to play with those guys again. Spent this morning playing with Robbie again at Ecclesia's Easter service. We played this Jon Foreman song "white as snow" from his winter EP. That song has spoken to me so much in recent months and really spoke to the crowd at church this morning.
I saw a ton of old friends and played music with some new ones. Robbie's kids are growing up so fast. I usually brace myself when I see Ethan because I can almost always expect some kind of kick in the crotch or a bite on the arm, but this time, kindergartener Ethan comes up and greets me with "Hello Mr. Taylor, how are you doing?" What?!
Had a lot of great conversations with old and new friends this weekend. It was awesome because somehow selflessness, humility, and grace eased their way into these conversations quicker than ever. God has really been stretching me with selflessness this season in my life. In Hosea it says "When I fed them they were satisfied, when they were satisfied they became proud, then they forgot me." So many times I forget how God has fed me in every aspect of my life: family, vocation, friends, etc... I take all of those blessings for granted and indulge myself in prideful cynicism and personal wants. I fail to see that He wants me to be broken in Him. I long for a broken heart in Him.
I just picked up the new Daniel Lanois album "here is what is".
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R-c1hD2tbWI/AAAAAAAAAC8/Y_py3-yoE0I/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181168738399776098" />
Track 5 starts with Brian Eno talking about beauty and how some of the most beautiful music and art that he has experienced comes from such unpromising beginnings. He then calls himself an unpromising beginning. We are all unpromising beginnings. Im learning that in all areas of life it takes a sort of letting go to gain control.
Im now back in Dallas
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R-c0YT2tbVI/AAAAAAAAAC0/O4VuLCdphVQ/s320/IMG_0123.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181167488564292946" />
These next couple of weeks I am in the studio in Dallas and on the road with Gatlin Elms and the Shanes. Check out Gatlin at www.myspace.com/Gatlinelmsband. I love this town. Broad street has so much to offer in the means of cool places to eat, great pubs, and the aquarium with an IMAX theater right next to it. Always a great idea. I played a week long gig with Robbie here about 2 years ago at some college on Lookout Mountain and we would always make the drive down to downtown Chattanooga for some late night relaxing. That might have been the same time we flew these <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9luQ9FvSaI/AAAAAAAAACE/A7uGnZr3F3E/s320/coyotetrike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177290484194691490" />
this is literally a go kart with hang-glider wings on it that takes you about 1000 feet in the air Im guessing. It was completely unsafe but a complete blast.
I stumbled across Phantom Planet's myspace yesterday to discover that they have a new record coming out April 15th. These guys have made some of my favorite records in the past 7 years. The Guest was such a place in time record for me. It combined the best of what I like about Elvis Costello and The Beatles mixed with Ric Ocasek vocal delivery. 3 years ago they brought their self titled record which sounded like they had been listening to the Cardigan's "gran turismo" and a little Fugazi. The self titled album is compressed so tastefully but at the same time sounds like it could blow up your soundsystem at any given moment. Songs like "knowitall" and "1st things 1st" are stand outs to me. Their new record is called "Raise the Dead" and you can hear two new songs "Leader" and "Do the Panic" on their myspace. These songs are so well crafted and combine hints of the Zombies, the Cars, and the tongue in cheek factor that Weezer/Beach Boys have always brought. Check it out if you want. This will a record store purchase for me.
Last night we were in Dublin, Ga. We started at 7:30 and the whole thing (with 3 bands) had to be done by 10pm.
We played a quick 45-50 minute set and I couldn't have been happier. Here is what it looked like

Dublin, Ga
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9lyktFvSbI/AAAAAAAAACM/hFeycpoFWKY/s320/IMG_0057.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177295221543618994" />

Tuesday's Gone

Tonight I am in Clinton, Mississippi. "Not quite" Jackson, Ms. I told you. Today isn't over, but it has been an easy and relaxing day so far. The tour had a day off yesterday in St. Louis, Mo. Days off always fall on Mondays and are usually way past due at that point. Play 6 days, take one day off. Monday. We hung out at the St. Louis galleria for most of the day. A group of us saw Bank Job. Save your cash. After that we chilled out and went to P.F. Chang's for dinner and Cheesecake factory later...decadence at its finest. It was a great group that provided a great evening.
Today was another big grinner. It doesn't take much to make me smile on the road. Today's surprise was laundry machines in the venue. This means I have clean clothes till I get home on Monday. That's something I definitely look forward to. I have about 5 weeks off and during that time I'll be recording some, playing in Houston a bit, hanging with friends and family, and moving out of the house Im currently leasing in Dallas. Any ideas where I should move?
Been listening to a lot of Nirvana the past week. I can't get over how great they were. 'Sliver' is standing out a ton right now.
Ive also been listening to a lot of Weezer's "Pinkerton" album. Same nostalgia, different time periods for me. "The Good Life" always stands out.
In stride with my previous posts I thought I would give you a stage shot that wasn't so lame. This one is with the stage on.

Clinton, Ms
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9dMRdFvSYI/AAAAAAAAAB0/QKBqPDx3qjQ/s320/clinton,+ms.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176690159435860354" />

Lawrence, KS

We played at Haskell Indian Nation University today. Honesty is underrated. How is it that the people in closest proximity are usually the most uncomfortable to open up to? The people you live with, eat with, sleep next to, work with, etc... are usually who you spend the most time with but somehow months and years can go by without any sort of healthy explanation of thoughts and feelings. Is it that much of an inconvenience? We have it backwards. I've definitely been blamed for being too forward with my opinions in the past, but recently I feel as though I've harnessed that and might be getting sucked into the realm of hypersensitivity that most people live in. Bottom line is that we are too afraid of what other people think, and we avoid confrontation at all costs. Be yourself. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Listening to: Hendrix: Band of Gypsys
Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Storyville: A Piece of Your Soul
Buddy and Julie Miller: Buddy and Julie Miller

Wichita, Ks
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9QnD9FvSWI/AAAAAAAAABk/Dh8yWeEBUzQ/s320/IMG_0049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5175804820647266658" />

Lake of Fire

Or the polar opposite. Keyword: polar. We played at the University of Nebraska today and saw that when I rolled off the bus it was 1. degree.
This kept me inside the bus watching the unedited (length, dialogue, rehearsals) version of Nirvana's unplugged concert dvd. I am convinced that Will Oldham is some how related to Kurt. If not Will, then Bonnie for sure. Nostalgia doesn't even begin to describe my feelings for the 2 hours I watched. Kurt Cobain was practically my big brother in 8th grade. Any feelings of spite, anger, and insecurity that pervaded my life at age 13/14 were quickly taken care of by turning up my crate combo and putting on The Muddy Banks of Wishkaw. I always had that to lean on at the end of the day... until 10pm when I would get shut down. This was 4 years after his death. It has now been 14 years since his death and I still get the same feeling every time I hear Scentless Apprentice. Timeless.

Today's show was in an auditorium that is also used as a lecture hall. This show was booked at the last minute...aka, last thursday.

Lincoln, Nebraska. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9JET9FvSVI/AAAAAAAAABc/_W9rbuLNUV4/s320/IMG_0046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5175274031408957778" />

Somewhere in Middle America

Getting right to the heart of matters.
I've been absent for about 8 months on this blog. All apologies. Being on the road is the perfect excuse to blog, but somehow it's slipped my mind. Does facebook count? I did give in, and became a pro at Jetman. Challenge me, I dare you.
Quick synopsis of the past 7.5 months: Fall tour with the Shanes. This brought some great friends in Gabe Scott and Adam Lester , both professionals in the purest sense. I respect them, respectively. During that tour I started training for a half marathon which found me running anywhere from 25-35 miles a week. Trained through the Christmas tour with the Shanes and ran the half marathon in Austin, Tx with my good buddy Ryan at the end of January. We both finished right around 1.5 hours. We were pumped and are training for a marathon, any marathon that falls around the 1st or 2nd week of June. In the last 7.5 months my niece Masie has turned 2, crazy right? and she has a new little sister, Presley. Presley is amazing! (thejohnsonshouse.blogspot.com) check out these two incredible girls that I get to call family. I am currently on the Shane and Shane spring tour and find myself in a Sleep Inn in Davenport, Iowa. This tour has brought some great new friends in the band Starfield. Gordie and homeless Dave have become my partners in crime and look forward to hanging out with them more on the 2nd leg of this tour that brings us to Canada for about (aboat) 3 weeks.
While on this tour I am going to try my best to take pictures of what's going on during the day and hopefully get sort of a yearbook of "stage photos" (a picture a day of every stage i play on this tour even though we are halfway done!). This could be a cool memoir.

We'll start with the past two days.
I've labeled this tour the "not quite" tour. This means if we have a show in Alabama we are playing in "not quite" Birmingham, but 37 miles outside of town. If we are playing in Florida we will play in "not quite" Miami, but 42 miles way outside of town.

Oklahoma
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9BkCkxnePI/AAAAAAAAABE/fPzn4xKxZQM/s320/IMG_0024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174745967243000050" />

Aurora, Mo
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/R9BmekxneQI/AAAAAAAAABM/cTaP44lTExM/s320/IMG_0035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174748647302592770" />
this stage was built for us in Aurora Junior High school's gym. Went to a concert with 4 other people. Including me thats the Pentfecta. Ages in my party ranged from 22-51. Relationships ranged from brother in law to Boss's dad. Couldnt have had a better time sharing this live music experience with my younger sis, her husband ryan, Shane E, and Larry Everett (aka Lare Bear). An incumbent smile ensued that lasted for a couple days.

2. Reading makes you smarter. (this next sentence ala Ernest Hemingway)...It was once boring to me and always has the essence of boredom and doesnt appear to be beneficial but it most certainly is and one cannot argue that and this pass time and past time will never lose its ground with the population of existing human beings as it is a necessary form of communication and is a necessary form of art and the most pure portrayal of the times.

I leave for awhile coming up soon. Im thinking about getting a bartending license and at the beginning of next year going overseas and living off a bartenders wage

Listening : Joe Walsh "Look What I Did"
Reading : Ernest Hemingway "A Farewell to Arms"

P.S.
Apple 'Q' on your computer, not on your dreams

Listen to this

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/RmsM8Nm924I/AAAAAAAAAA0/TSoxjFrxm4w/s320/200px-Tbwnn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074163633747778434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/RmsMT9m922I/AAAAAAAAAAk/2QPVlMdClPg/s320/images-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074162942258043746" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/RmsMT9m923I/AAAAAAAAAAs/lqwsekoiWPI/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074162942258043762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/RmsLwNm921I/AAAAAAAAAAc/_geEHlU9Yh0/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074162328077720402" />
Every now and then I check out my Itunes stats to see what I listen to the most. I usually play my Ipod through my car, unless Im on a plane. I drive a lot, so I listen a ton. These albums below are albums that itunes said Ive listened to at least 20 times all the way through. One is just 20 times, one is over 75 times through.

Simon Dawes - Carnivore
can't stress it enough, best rock band in the past 5 years, no doubt about it, try and prove me wrong

Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
I used to be really impartial to Conor Oberst, but he won me over with Cassadaga. Songs like "If the Brakeman Turns My Way", "No One Would Riot for Less", and "Coat Check Dream Song". Almost lyrical pedal steel work from Mike Mogis.

Dwight Yoakam - Dwight's Used Records
If you arent a fan of country music, this will change your mind

John Davis - John Davis
I was a huge fan of Superdrag, and now John Davis is doing his own thing. This record, to me, sounds like Brian WIlson at lunch with Rivers Cuomo in Nashville, TN.

Keith Gattis - Big City Blues
Dwight's old guitar player. This is his solo cd. I swear John Bonham supernaturally played drums on this.

Travis - The Boy With No Name
They did it. I love it.

3:42 pm
update
I forgot the most important of all these

Masie

<a href="

This is my niece Masie. I recently have been described as a wandering mercenary. That seems about right. Ive managed to live in 11 different Texas cities in my life, pretty crazy, huh? huh? it's weird to type "huh". I digress...

Im back in Dallas, still playing, still doin it, doin it. I moved into a house in Lakewood. This is a good move. It is really close to everything (lower greenville, white rock lake, downtown). My roomate reminds me a lot of my old roomate travis . That's a good thing. What it was T-rav, "your love endures forever".

I was in houston this weekend playing on my friend Jill Paquette's new project. It is sounding great. Very Kathleen Edwards's "Back to Me" meets Shawn Colvin's "A Few Small Repairs" at a Kasey Chambers concert. Keep an eye/ear out in a couple months for the new songs.

Ive been running a lot as well. The usual 3 miles/30 minute, whichever comes first run. I personally find that to help me mentally more so than physically if done routinely. I went to a Greek Orthodox church last sunday... I could use more of that in my life.

Taylor

we'll see what happens

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_anyB4xPr-_c/RmHmPL7_uvI/AAAAAAAAAAM/QKcsq6GI53A/s320/IMG_3040.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071587803972745970" />
I have a blog, i probably wont update it, but I'll give it a try
